The Opposite of Lucid Dreaming

Maybe it simply stems from my having seen Waking Life at a young age, but I am fascinated by the study of sleep. REM sleep and lucid dreams are fairly common topics these days, but what about dreams that seem so realistic that the dreamer confuses them for a memory of reality? (Or is that just me...)

Where is this line between dream and reality? And in the end, what is sleep?

I've found that the number of lucid dreams that I've been having and remembering have been significantly on the increase, which is weird--I normally never remember my dreams. But I'm trying to track down the pattern--always right before I wake up in that semi-hazy, fight-the-alarm-clock mode, and mainly about terrible, terrible things.

Have you ever heard that theory that dreams are meant to prepare you for worst-case scenarios in real life? I forget exactly where I heard that, but it was most likely during some discussion on the evolutionary significance of having and remembering dreams. If that's the case, I don't think I'm very prepared...
